Radical Spirit with Joan Chittister, OSB
Friday, June 1; 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm with Book Signing
Special Location: Kalamazoo Central Auditorium
We live in anxious times. Today’s American culture is experiencing an epidemic of anxiety that suppresses our rational and reflective abilities and surfaces tendencies to fearful reaction. The least wise part of our brains grabs the steering wheel of our lives and the results are all around us. But it needn’t be so.
There is an ancient virtue that, if properly understood, releases the grip of anxiety. It is called humility and it has nothing to do with low self-esteem, weakness, character flaws, or self-deprecation. It has everything to do with a deep trust in a loving “God of Surprises” who relies on us to bring God’s dream of peace and justice to life. This trust liberates us from the tyranny of our own tightly wound selves. It gives us grounding for emotional stability. In the words of Sister Joan, it makes me “free to grow bigger than my focus on my small self would ever otherwise allow.
Joan Chittister is a beloved Benedictine Sister and best-selling author many times over. An influential religious and social leader, she lectures internationally on issues of justice, human rights, peace, and spirituality. Her work appeals across religious traditions as well as to those who follow no religious path.
