My mom was driving to work on her 33rd birthday when she was involved in a terrible car accident that left her paralyzed 24 years ago. It was three days before my 4th birthday and my brother had just turned two the week before. I remember her giving me a hug and kiss then walking out the front door. She was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt. Little did I know that my earliest memory would be the only one I would ever have of her walking.
I am now 28, and have seen her endure all the obstacles this injury has thrown at her. It is extremely hard to witness the injury get worse throughout the years, but she is a fighter and continues to battle paralysis every day. It has made me appreciate the small things in life, and to never take anything for granted.
I am running for Team U2FP because I know my mom would do anything to have the opportunity to walk again. Her injury has motivated me to run the Santa Cruz Marathon, and I look forward to raising money for this charity.
