In April of 2015, I will join 30 other people for what I know will be an amazing, life changing experience; The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults Key to Keys bike ride. Over the course of 8 days, we will ride from Key Highway in Baltimore, MD to Key West, FL. Why do this? I have been blessed in so many ways, but I know so many people that have fought a battle with cancer, some successfully and some not. I joined UCF's Team Fight over 5 years ago to raise funds and provide support for the many cancer patients and their families that UCF reaches. I want to do more...by challenging myself to this journey, I will connect with survivors, patients and their families in a way that I haven't been able to thus far. I will stop along our route to provide support at select cancer treatment centers. I will start each day with a dedication circle, remembering those we have lost, celebrating those still with us. I will be an ambassador for UCF, spreading their message along the east coast. My own mother, Diane Cardinal Roy, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 59-25 years later, she is a survivor and my hero. I created a list of everyone I know who has been diagnosed, died, survived-it was an incredibly long list. I am doing this for them-and I will have a wall of memory and a wall of honor. Names will be by initial unless those people give me permission to use their name-either way, they will be remembered each and every day of my ride. UCF Experiences Key to Keys is a journey that brings together a diverse group of individuals to build a community of support for those affected by cancer. Using cycling as a platform, Key to Keys participants come together throughout the journey to share their individual cancer connections and give out as much support to others as they are receiving.
