Several years ago, my best friend Mike was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Needless to say I was shocked, especially since I'd never known anyone this close to me with cancer. Of course my shock paled in comparison to what Mike was going through.
Since then, to honor Mike’s successful fight against cancer, I’ve been considering different options to raise money to help fight cancer. I’m surrounded by friends locally who raise money every year through running races or triathlons, but cycling is my sport, so I’ve waited. A few years ago, the Ulman Cancer Fund started the Key to Keys bike ride which really piqued my interest. After hearing about the experience from friends that had participated the first couple of years, I pretty much made up my mind to do it.
Another close friend of mine, Jim, was also diagnosed with cancer within this past year. At the Key to Keys 2014 kickoff, as Jim was preparing for a bone marrow transplant, he and I made a pact that if he was healthy by April 2015, we’d experience the Key to Keys 2015 ride together. Jim is now healthy and we're both on board for the ride!
Please help support me and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults as we ride our bikes from Key Highway, Baltimore to Key West, Florida.
UCF Experiences Key to Keys is a journey that brings together a diverse group of individuals to build a community of support for those affected by cancer. Using cycling as a platform, Key to Keys participants come together throughout the journey to share their individual cancer connections and give out as much support to others as they are receiving.
