I think that it is safe to say that cancer has affected all of our lives in one way or another. While the degrees of separation by which cancer has touched our lives vary, the fact that we have all been impacted remains. For me personally, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2014. She underwent a double mastectomy and over a year of grueling chemotherapy treatment. Thankfully, her treatments were successful and she is healthy and fit today. While I cannot speak on this first hand, it was truly remarkable to see the amount of love and support my mom received during her fight.
I first learned about the Ulman Cancer Fund through my mom when she relayed a story to me of a young woman named Allison. Through the Ulman Cancer Fund, Allsion participated in the 4K for Cancer ride where she rode her bike 4000 miles across the country in support of those battling cancer. She dipped her rear tire of her bike in the Baltimore Harbor and a little over 2 months later she dipped the front tire of her bike in the Pacific Ocean. On the culminating day of her ride when she dipped her front tire in the Pacific Ocean, she had my mom's name written in sharpie on her calf. The beautiful thing is that my family has never met Allison! She is a friend of a friend who had heard about my mom's fight with breast cancer, and Allison finished her 2+ month long ride in support of my mom! I was fortunate to witness the impact that Allison's support, love, and prayers had on my mom, and it was through this inspiration that I decided to create this page.
Recently, a young woman by the name of Annie, a close friend of one of my best friends, was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 25. She is currently undergoing her second round of chemo treatment with a potential third round and bone marrow transplant on the horizion. #teamsweetannie. While I am not running across the country (like Allison is this summer), my thoughts, prayers, love, and support will be with Annie and her family as I run the Boston Marathon.
I am honored, humbled, and blessed to be able to dedicate my race and past 5 months of training to the Ulman Cancer Fund and Annie's fight. My goal for the race is a 2:49:59. Thank you for your support and donations, and a special thank you to the doner who pledged to match all donations.
- Kyle
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer expereience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
Your donation will help make these programs and our mission possible!
