My name is Meredith Hughes and I'm excited to be on the inaugural Point to Point Team! I biked across the country with the 4K for Cancer in 2004 and I ran up the California coast in 2014 as part of the Mission to Vine run team. I also have run several half marathons with TEAM FIGHT!
I will be spending a week in October with Ulman Cancer Fund as we make our way down the east coast from Baltimore, MD to Key West, FL. This journey will be our platform to give support to cancer survivors, young adults affected by cancer and to change lives! This trip will help provide continued support for Ulman Cancer Fund programs like CANCER to 5K, allow us to open more patient navigation centers and provide books/resources to young adults affected by cancer.
This year, I'll be running in memory of my friend, and Mission to Vine teammate, Brian Petras. Brian joined our trip while battling lung cancer. We bonded on many runs we shared while on the trip. Brian, like most young adults, just wanted to enjoy life and wasn't going to let cancer define him. Brian and I made a pact that as soon as he was cancer free we would run a marathon together. Unfortuntately Brian's story ended far too early at the young age of 30 and we weren't able to complete that marathon together. While Point to Point isn't a marathon, I still think Brian would be proud. This is for you BP!
A quote from Brian that has made a lasting impression on me:
"Everyone goes through difficult times in life. It could be cancer, the loss of a loved one, financial troubles, or plenty of other terrible things. The good news is that you’re still alive. It’s OK to be sad sometimes, but don’t get down on yourself. Make the most out of what you have, set goals, and enjoy your life. Don’t give up."
Each morning before we start our trek, we will spend a few moments and dedicate our run to people we have met or supported us a long the way. Please send me a note and I would love to add more people to my dedication list.
I may not be the fastest runner and I may have to walk at times, but I'm going to run for those who can't and run for all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. I hope you will support me and the Point to Point team in this journey as we give support to those fighting cancer and those affected by cancer!

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer expereience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
