It has been twenty years since I lost my mother to lung cancer at the age of fifty-eight, but I remember each second as if it were yesterday. Still, one particular moment still makes me pause – my mother was wheeled in a procedure room for a lung biopsy that could take her life. I was told she needed to be fully awake and her lung had a fair chance of collapsing. The bottom line was she may not come out of the room alive. I sat and cried, feeling sorry for her and myself. Then a young man walked by with a protective mask over his face, thin limbs and bald head. He looked about 18 to 20 years old as he pushed his IV pole down the hall and I quickly dried my eyes. Suddenly, I realized how lucky I was to have had my mother for fifty-eight years, to have my own healthy body. That young mans strength filled me with courage and fortitude, and allowed me to be the rock my mother needed to pass peacefully five weeks later. This Key to Keys ride provides funds for the Ulman Cancer Young Adults. They support patients like that young man that helped me understand cancer a little deeper when I needed to most. I can't do this alone. It will take my friends, family and aquaintances as I need to raise the minimum donation of $4500.00 to ride. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
 

Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.

UCF House - a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore. 

Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.

Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
