Welcome, Jo, to Tucson Audubon's weekly update.

Brad Andres, of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is quoted in the latest National Audubon strategic plan. He says “Working with Audubon is great because there are no egos. It’s not brand first, it’s birds first.”

If we always remember that, we'll be okay.

Enjoy this weekly update and, as always, contact us with your questions and concerns.

Celebrate a Living River--The San Pedro

Monday, September 12, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Tucson Audubon Society invites you to join us for the launch of our 2016-2017 Living With Nature Monthly Program in Tucson, a free series for the public designed to entertain, inform, and educate.

Join us for WORDS ON WATER: A Literary Celebration of the San Pedro with esteemed authors Alison Hawthorne Deming, Richard Shelton, and Ken Lamberton who will all be introduced by their friend and colleague, Robert Houston. This will take place at Pima Community College's downtown campus. A campus map is available here, and is important to reference as Speedway Blvd is under construction.

Listen to them read excerpts from their own writings that relate to the San Pedro and our beautiful surroundings. Afterwards please join us for light refreshments while the authors will sign their books.

Although this event is free we would appreciate an RSVP.

Amethyst Room, Pima Community College, Downtown Campus
1255 N. Stone Avenue (corner of Speedway Blvd.)

Paton Center Creekside Restoration Planting Day

September 14, Wednesday, 9:00 AM--1:00 PM
Now’s your chance to join the Restoration Crew for a day planting grasses, wildflowers, and small shrubs along the Sonoita Creek. Recently there was a giant flood on the creek. The extra water is helping the sacaton to grow in, and it also floated away some debris and created bare areas that we need to fill in. The irrigation will already be in place, this is your opportunity to help with the fun and fulfilling part – putting natural bird-feed producing plants in the ground to sustain the birds of the Paton Center for years to come!

A Lifeline for At-Risk Birds - Take Action!

For dozens of declining species, from the Cerulean Warbler (image by Frode Jacobsen) to the Short-eared Owl, time is running out. A major boost in resources is needed to help protect birds and other wildlife in all corners of the country. Now, a new bill could provide a lifeline for these birds and thousands of other species of wildlife. The Recovering America's Wildlife Act would dedicate more than $1 billion each year to help those with the greatest conservation need.

We need all of the resources that can be marshaled to protect birds from further habitat loss, climate change, and other threats, and a major investment in conservation funding would set the stage for a brighter future for birds, and for all of us.

Please ask your U.S. Representative to support the Recovering America's Wildlife Act using National Audubon's alert page. You can send a sample letter, or edit it with your own words for even greater impact (many members of Congress have special software so they can easily see personalized emails).

OPTICS

Swarovski EL 8x32
Do your wrists and shoulders get tired from holding heavy binoculars while birding up Mt. Lemmon or scanning for the Pine Flycatcher at Aliso Spring. Do you want a smaller binocular that still has the very finest technology? Weighing only 20.5 ounces and measuring 5.3 inches tall by 4.3 inches wide, the EL 32mm Swarovision is made for hot days in southeast Arizona when you want as little weighing you down as possible. This generation of the EL binocular comes with innovations that provide sharp clarity and edges in spite of the compact size. In shady Madera Canyon oak forests the EL’s improved coating technology a bright and well-defined image and great contrast, something you could not have asked for in earlier compact binoculars. The EL 32 Swarovision also has a surprisingly good field of view. We know Tucson Audubon customers are demanding users and that southeast Arizona is a demanding birding environment. This binocular is up to the test. The Swarovision comes with the Swarovski limited lifetime warranty.

Member Price $2199.00, Retail $2443.33
